Hi everyone,

On other NAS devices, I normally run an "extended" hard drive test on new drives before I use them; however, in TOS 5.1, there is no option to "check for bad blocks." It looks like the substitute is to run a S.M.A.R.T. Long Test. I tried that, but I can't find any status indicating that the test is continuing or how long it has left (like in other OSs). I can look at the Hard Drive Log tab, and I can see that the SMART test has been started, and if I attempt to run it again, the modal window that briefly pops up says it was successfully started, but the log shows that it is "currently unavailable." I am guessing that means the original test I ran is still running, which is why subsequent runs are unavailable?

1. Where can I see a current status of the S.M.A.R.T. Long Test, such as a commonplace percentage progress bar?
2. When the test finishes, I guess that I will see a line item in the Hard Drive Log tab that it ended. I presume the results of the test will be found in the S.M.A.R.T. Info section (button) under the S.M.A.R.T. tab after I see that line item?

I'm also curious how others here might test their drives before using them in the NAS? Are there better ways to do so on the NAS itself (specifically, TOS 5.1) Or do I need some elaborate external hardware configuration with specific software to scan my hard drives for defects?

Thanks in advance!
In TOS 5.1, there is no current status display for SMART tests, but in TOS 6.0, there is.
